Through The Looking Glass

Waking up, you open your eyes. Out of bed, your feet hit the floor. Walking to the mirror, your reflection stares back at you. Picking up a brush, your morning routine begins. Behind a mask of paint, you’re now ready to face the world.

Out in the open, people are rushing by. They speak at times, no eye contact. Monotone voices, no one really cares. Rarely a smile, mostly sighs and frowns. Anxiety begins to set in, it’s unbearable here. Feelings of suffocation, breathing becomes foreign. Fighting the panic, it’s time to go home now.

Unlocking the front door, breathing becomes easier. Walking to the mirror, your reflection stares back at you. Running steaming hot water, you wash off the mask. Catching a glance of your face, relief finally sinks in. In this moment, alone, you are free.
